Senator John Fetterman Breaks With Democrats, Praises U.S. Military After Maduro Capture
Washington, D.C. — Democratic Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) emerged as one of the few Democrats to publicly praise the United States military following a reported large-scale U.S. operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife early Saturday morning.
In a statement posted on X, Fetterman thanked U.S. service members for their role in the mission, highlighting American military strength at a time when most Democrats have remained silent.
“Grateful for our U.S. military personnel that handled these orders in Venezuela with precision,” Fetterman wrote. “I maintain that we have the strongest and most lethal military in the world, and today proves that even more.”
The remarks quickly drew attention online, as Fetterman’s statement stood in contrast to the broader Democratic response, which has largely avoided public commentary on the operation.
Trump Confirms Operation, Promises More Details
President Donald Trump confirmed the operation in a post on Truth Social, describing it as a coordinated effort involving both the U.S. military and federal law enforcement agencies.
“This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement,” Trump wrote, adding that further details would be released during an 11 a.m. press conference.
Administration officials have so far declined to provide operational specifics, citing ongoing security considerations.

Timing Raises Geopolitical Questions
The capture of Maduro comes just days after the Venezuelan leader publicly signaled openness to negotiations with the United States on issues including drug trafficking and oil production. Maduro and Trump reportedly spoke by phone in November, fueling speculation that diplomatic talks were underway.
Despite those signals, Trump has repeatedly suggested that decisive action against the Venezuelan government remained an option. In late December, he told reporters it would be “smart” for Maduro to step aside, while emphasizing that the decision ultimately rested with the Venezuelan leader.
A Rare Democratic Endorsement of Military Action
Fetterman’s comments mark a rare moment of bipartisan praise for a major U.S. military action abroad. Known for occasionally breaking with party leadership on foreign policy and national security issues, the Pennsylvania senator has previously emphasized a hawkish stance when it comes to American military readiness.
As the administration prepares to release more information, the operation is expected to spark intense debate in Congress over U.S. involvement in Venezuela and the broader implications for regional stability in Latin America.
More details are expected following the White House briefing later today.
