Electricity Bill Concerns Raised in Southern New Hampshire’s NH-02 District
U.S. congressional candidate Lily Tang Williams has raised concerns about rising electricity costs in New Hampshire’s 2nd Congressional District, after a constituent reported receiving an unusually high winter utility bill.
According to Williams, a resident from Salem, New Hampshire contacted her about a January electricity bill totaling $769, which included a $413 delivery charge. The resident said the home is newly built and uses energy-efficient features such as LED lighting and mini-split heating systems.
The homeowner reportedly moved into the 2,663-square-foot house in September and expected lower energy costs due to the modern construction and efficiency upgrades. However, the high bill raised questions about electricity pricing and delivery charges in the region.
The electricity service is provided by Liberty Utilities, a utility company owned by a Canadian-based parent firm. In New Hampshire, utilities often charge delivery fees for transmitting electricity through the grid, while the actual power is generated from various plants across the ISO New England power network.
Williams said the issue highlights broader concerns about energy costs for residents in southern New Hampshire, especially during winter months when heating demand increases. She noted that high electricity bills, combined with property taxes and other expenses, can place significant pressure on working families.
The discussion comes amid ongoing debates in New Hampshire about energy policy, grid delivery costs, and the role of deregulation in reducing electricity prices for residents. Williams has called for exploring a range of energy sources and policies aimed at lowering costs for Granite State households.
Energy costs in New England have been a frequent topic of discussion among policymakers and residents, particularly during colder months when demand for heating and electricity rises across the region.
A constituent in my district NH02 shared this with me. His family's electricity bill in January was $769 including the delivery charge at $413.
