At a meeting of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on Thursday, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) spoke about his priorities for the committee and the best ways to achieve them.
Sanders expressed his view that the American healthcare system is broken and dysfunctional, with 85 million Americans uninsured or underinsured, 500,000 people filing for bankruptcy every year due to medical debt, and 68,000 people dying every year because they cannot afford to go to the doctor.
Sanders also highlighted the need to address the primary healthcare system, which is struggling even worse, including the need to address the horrific mental health crisis and the opioid crisis. He also noted that despite the high cost of healthcare, insurance companies still made over 60 billion dollars in profits last year.
Sanders also expressed his belief that women have the right to control their own bodies and that the government should not interfere and called for the codification of Roe v. Wade to protect the reproductive rights of women. He also expressed his concern about the high cost of prescription drugs in the United States and his hope that the committee can come together to address these issues.
