Tulsi Gabbard swear in Joe Kent as the Director of the National Counterterrorism Center |
Joe Kent Confirmed as Director of National Counterterrorism Center, Welcomed by DNI Tulsi Gabbard
“His battlefield experience and sacrifice will reinvigorate America's counterterrorism mission,” says Gabbard.
Washington, D.C. — July 31, 2025
In a significant move to strengthen America’s national security apparatus, Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard formally welcomed Joe Kent as the new Director of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) following his confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
Joe Kent, a decorated Army veteran with 11 combat deployments and deep experience in counterterrorism operations, will now oversee the Office of the Director of National Intelligence’s (ODNI) counterterrorism mission. His new role includes coordinating intelligence integration and dissemination across agencies to help prevent and respond to terrorist threats both within the United States and abroad.
“With two decades of military service, including 11 combat deployments, Joe has consistently put country before self, enduring great personal sacrifice in that service,” said DNI Gabbard. “His leadership will help refocus the NCTC on the threats we face — not only from Islamist terrorism, but also from transnational crime syndicates like drug cartels engaged in human trafficking and narcotics smuggling.”
DNI Gabbard emphasized that under Kent’s leadership, the NCTC will work more closely with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to carry out President Donald Trump’s renewed border security and homeland defense initiatives.
“Joe’s appointment reflects a renewed commitment to integrated, mission-focused counterterrorism operations that prioritize the safety, security, and freedom of the American people,” she added.
A Career of Service and Sacrifice
In his remarks, Director Kent called the appointment a “profound honor” and cited the personal toll of the War on Terror as his enduring motivation.
“From Fallujah to Yemen, I’ve been on the front lines for over two decades,” Kent said. “I lost my wife Shannon and many brothers-in-arms to this fight. Their sacrifice is my driving force to lead NCTC with unrelenting focus and urgency.”
A native of Oregon, Kent served in the U.S. Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment, Special Forces, and Army Special Operations Command, earning six Bronze Stars over his military career. Following his Army retirement in 2018, he joined the CIA’s Special Activities Center as a paramilitary officer, continuing his work in high-risk theaters of operation.
Kent is a graduate of Norwich University, holding a degree in Strategic Defense Analysis.
Looking Ahead
National security officials say Kent’s background positions him uniquely to address both legacy terrorist threats and emerging national security challenges tied to organized transnational criminal activity.
In a politically charged but security-focused environment, Kent’s confirmation signals a shift toward a more aggressive, field-experienced approach to homeland defense and intelligence coordination. His leadership is expected to strengthen U.S. resilience against evolving terrorist strategies and cartel-linked infiltration across borders.
“There’s no better time to take on this mission,” Kent said. “I am grateful to President Trump and DNI Gabbard for entrusting me to lead this critical fight.”
