CA Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a groundbreaking development for Californians: the option to add their driver’s licenses or state IDs to Apple Wallet on iPhones and Apple Watches. This innovative feature aims to modernize how residents use and present their identification in select locations.
Here are the top 10 things you need to know about this new capability.
1. Apple Wallet Now Stores Driver’s Licenses and State IDs
Californians can now securely store their driver’s licenses or state IDs in Apple Wallet, making it more convenient to present identification using their iPhone or Apple Watch. This feature is part of California’s mobile driver’s license (mDL) pilot program.
2. Governor Newsom’s Vision for Digital Services
Governor Gavin Newsom emphasized that this integration is part of California’s goal to better serve residents in the digital age. “With this new integration, we’re working to better serve the people of California in the 21st Century,” Newsom stated, aligning the project with his administration's broader focus on tech-driven services.
3. Use at Select Businesses and TSA Checkpoints
Californians will be able to use their digital ID at specific businesses and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints. This includes major hubs like San Francisco International Airport and Los Angeles International Airport.
4. Part of a Larger Mobile Driver’s License Pilot Program
The Apple Wallet feature is part of a larger pilot program launched by the state’s DMV. The pilot currently limits participation to 1.5 million residents, following an earlier announcement that Google Wallet also supports mobile driver’s licenses.
5. Enhanced Security and Privacy
Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, explained that the system is designed with privacy and security in mind. When presenting an ID, only the necessary information is shared, and users have the option to review and authorize it before sharing. Importantly, neither Apple nor the DMV can access personal data unless it’s explicitly shared by the user.
6. How to Add a Driver’s License or ID
Adding a driver’s license or state ID to Apple Wallet is simple. Californians can tap the + button in the Wallet app on their iPhone, select "Driver’s License or State ID," and follow the setup instructions. This includes scanning both sides of the physical ID and taking a selfie for verification.
7. A Backup to Physical IDs
While this digital option is convenient, it doesn’t replace the need for a physical ID when driving. Californians are still required to carry their physical card, but the digital ID provides an additional method of identity verification for everyday use.
8. Partnership with Apple
California’s DMV is partnering with Apple to ensure a smooth rollout of this feature. DMV Director Steve Gordon emphasized that this initiative is part of the DMV’s broader push to become a "mobile-first organization," offering residents more secure and convenient digital options.
9. Strong Momentum Behind the Mobile ID Program
The mDL pilot program, which began in August 2023, has already gained traction. Over 625,000 Californians have added their mDLs to the DMV Wallet. This initiative aligns with the state’s Digital Identity Framework, providing a secure and efficient way for residents to manage their identification.
10. A Major Step Toward Digital Wallet Integration
This development is another step toward a future where physical wallets may become obsolete. Bailey emphasized the significance of the launch in California, saying it marks an important milestone not only for the state but also for Apple's long-term vision of replacing physical wallets with secure digital alternatives.
As the pilot expands and more residents adopt digital IDs, the future of how Californians present and manage their identification is set to change dramatically, offering more convenience, security, and control over personal data.
