Donald Trump with Mike Pence during a campaign rally |
Former President Donald Trump spoke at a campaign event in Arizona on Friday for Republican gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake, while his former VP Mike Pence campaigned for Lake's rival Karrin Taylor Robson.
Former President Donald Trump at a campaign event for Arizona gubernatorial candidate on Friday, he mocked the January 6th committee hearings, which included testimony that the former president attacked a secret service agent in an attempt to get to the capitol that day. He said:
I grabbed the wheel but I don't know, my hands went to the throat or something of the other secret service agent. This guy is like 300 pounds or something. I mean, I'm president of the United States. Imagine this made-up story.
Former Vice President Mike Pence is also making several appearances this week. So Let's talk about the significance of Arizona and this Trump-Pence dynamic. It's remarkable that the former Vice President is campaigning for someone the President has not endorsed. Arizona is a very important swing state, one that president Biden won narrowly. So Trump has a lot of anger about Arizona, and the fact that he thinks it is one of the states where the election was stolen from him. To have Mike Pence go there and support a candidate who's said, let's move forward, but I don't believe the election was rigged.
Also, we are seeing the former Vice President taking additional steps to distance himself from Trump. Can you talk about those steps and what we heard from Pence this weekend? Pence is a mostly traditional republican in his speech. He didn't mention Trump by name or say anything about his leadership or anything to commend his former boss. A few times he said something about the Trump-Pence agenda. He said something about the fact there are those that want to make this election about the past.
It's hard not to hear him say that and think it's a reference to Trump, who's been relitigating 2020 since if day that he lost. It's the major talking point in his speeches and social media postings. So Mike Pence is not directly attacking his former boss Trump, but he's showing signs that he wants to distance himself, especially since vice president Pence has his eye on running for president.
And President Trump gave his keynote address at the Student Action Summit in Tampa, Florida on Saturday. He did talk about inflation but it felt like he was talking about it just to mock president Biden.
The question becomes, as he toys with supporters and the media about whether Trump will run in 2024? how much of his speeches are just a long list of grievances against people he doesn't like people like mitch McConnell and people who have sort of been in his corner like Kevin McCarthy, versus actually talking about the issues that matter to Americans. I would say the majority of his speeches are what you said.
He talked about crazy Nancy Pelosi. There was a lock her up chant. He will talk about the border law, the immigration, a lot of red meat to his base to get them fired up, but no big plans for the future. It's just, that I promise your lives would be better in a Trump presidency.
Speaking of the former President being in Florida, can you tell us what's going on with Ron DeSantis there?
Trump believes nobody could take him on, but it's a different team over there. He's like the younger more polished version of Donald Trump, and Republicans think maybe that's the answer to the future for them. But it's not just him.
You've seen folks like Glen Youngkin, even some talking about Liz Cheney. She's facing her own tough primary in a couple of weeks here. I don't know what her support would be in a Republican primary. But you hear a lot of Republicans privately say, I really want to move on. We want to move on from Trump. We can keep talking about the things that Trump talks about, but let's have another leader at the helm. You're also hearing behind the scenes with Democrats as well, saying we need a new leader may be to move the Democratic party forward. It will be interesting to see if these two men take each other on again or the younger member of the party.
A big poll was taken over the weekend and the president seems to come out on top of that. It was believe it or not California governor Gavin Newsom. He's at least the clear winner of the poll that said which democrat will be the toughest to beat in 2024. I think that's how it was phrased. Newsom already aired an ad in Florida kind of needling the governor and immigration rights for people there. It's still 2022 and we're talking.
