Sanders expressed his view that the American healthcare system is broken and dysfunctional, with 85 million Americans uninsured or underinsured, 500,000 people filing for bankruptcy every year due to medical debt, and 68,000 people dying every year because they cannot afford to go to the doctor. Sanders also highlighted the need to address the primary healthcare system, which is struggling even worse, including the need to address the horrific mental health crisis and the opioid crisis.
